Teeth Whitening is a common procedure in general dentistry, mainly sought after for cosmetic reasons rather than medical. There are many methods to whiten teeth from bleaching strips, pens, gels to laser bleaching and natural bleaching. How successful is dependent on genetic factors and the lifestyle of the person.
Certain antibiotic medications can cause internal staining which means the teeth is stained from the inside out. This can be remedied with internal bleaching, bonding or crowning which can be done be performed by the dentist. For many other types of stains, a teeth whitening procedure working with an oxidizing agent such as carbamide peroxide is able to bleach the teeth, leaving it several shades whiter than before.
Traditional at-home whitening involves applying bleaching gel to the teeth using thin guard trays. At-home whitening can also be done by applying small strips that go over the front teeth. The oxidizing agent penetrates the enamel to oxidize the stains from the teeth.
Low-concentration whitening present in take-home kits is generally far less effective. In salons and other teeth whitening establishments, a concentration of carbamide peroxide which breaks down to 16% efficacy and under, is recommended. A typical course of teeth whitening can produce dramatic improvements in the cosmetic appearance of most stained teeth, however some stains do not respond to bleaching. A trip to the dentist may be appropriate then.
