How to Stay Motivated for Exercise in Winter

It’s easy to hit the snooze button when your alarm is beeping at you on an early chilly winter morning and you’re snuggled up in bed. However, with a little bit of willpower and determination, you can achieve and maintain that fit and healthy body you desire.

Ever heard the saying “anything in life worth having is worth working for”? Well, think of this in regards to your body. If you want to nurture and treat your body well – or even simply want to wear a bikini confidently this summer – you’ve got to work at it. Unfortunately, wishing just isn’t going to cut it. So, when you begin to tell yourself for the hundredth time “I’ll start exercising tomorrow”, remember that we’ll be welcoming spring in less than a month!

Another motivation tip to remember is that you can rely on the fact that you’ll always feel better after exercising than you did before. The body’s endorphins, or, “happy hormones” released during a workout carry on throughout the day to increase our wellbeing and vitality. But it doesn’t end there – not only does exercise increase energy levels, but it helps us to de-stress, create a healthy brain, improve quality of sleep, and even ward off a cold!

You know the last time you felt regret and disappointment when you wish you’d gotten out of bed and exercised? Remind yourself of this feeling the next time your alarm beeps you awake and it is cold and dark outside and you’re having second thoughts. “Actually, I don’t really care about my health and wellbeing after all. I think sleeping in and feeling sluggish is much better”…said nobody! Ever!

Another trick for staying motivated for exercise in the colder months is to mix it up. Going for a run every day may appeal to some, but most find that variety helps to maintain their enthusiasm for exercise in the long-term.

How about instead of dreading getting up to go for a run or go to the gym, take classes in something like dance, spin, boxing or Pilates? Or, you could put on a yoga DVD and break a sweat without ever having to leave the lounge-room or taking off your PJ’s! As an added bonus, you’ll achieve better results as different muscle groups are worked and your body and mind are being constantly challenged.

If all else fails, remind yourself “don’t sacrifice what I want most for what I want right now”. Yes, hitting the snooze button may provide you with immediate gratification, but think of how satisfied you’ll feel when you feel healthy, fit and confident.
