Everything you need to know about daith piercings

Daith piercings look beautiful on any ear but also have potential benefits you may not have heard of! Keep reading to find out more.

What’s a daith piercing?

A daith piercing is in the innermost fold of cartilage in the ear, positioned just above the ear canal. While it may appear subtle or even hidden at first glance, this unique placement is part of what makes the daith so distinctive and appealing.

Piercing the daith requires precision, as it passes through one of the thickest sections of cartilage in the ear. Despite its complexity, many people are drawn to daith piercings for their bold look and the option to showcase small, stylish jewellery such as hoops or curved barbells.

Hidden benefits

According to professionals, a daith piercing may help ease migraine and some anxiety related symptoms. Your ear is home to many pressure points, which target the vagus nerve. The vagus nerve is the longest of the 10 nerves, from the bottom of the brain to the rest of your body. Getting a daith piercing may put pressure on this nerve, cause simulation, and relieve some symptoms.

Treatment of anxiety and migraine-related symptoms has not been scientifically proven – however, it’s worth a try & looks great!

What jewellery can I use?

  • Captive Bead Rings (CBRs): These rings feature a small bead or ball held in place within the circular ring, adding a subtle yet stylish detail to your piercing.
  • Hinged Rings: Known for their easy-to-use hinge mechanism, these rings open and close smoothly and come in a wide range of shapes and styles. They can also be personalised with charms for a more customised look.
  • Barbells: A horseshoe or curved barbell is also a great option for daith piercings. The curved bar, finished with a ball on each end, offers a clean, simple design with a touch of elegance.

Healing Time & Aftercare

Healing times are also different for everyone, as it will depend on the person’s anatomy and your aftercare. For complete healing of a Daith piercing we recommend waiting 12-24 months before leaving any jewellery out of the piercing.

  • It has been 12-24 months since you received your piercing*.
  • There is no more discharge or redness.
  • The piercing is not tender to touch.
  • The jewellery is loose and moves somewhat freely.

*Please note: these times are general, and healing varies for the individual. If you are unsure, visit your Piercing Experts to consult and advise.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Weeks 1-2 clean twice daily with Sterilear Step-1 Piercing Spray.
  • Weeks 3 and onwards Clean twice daily with Sterilear Step-2 Piercing Spray.
  • Avoid sleeping on your piercing.
  • Do not touch, twist, or knock your jewellery.
  • Avoid tight clothing that may rub.
  • Treat piercing bumps with Calm Piercing Bump Treatment Dots.

Remember, piercings heal from the outside in. Even if it looks healed on the surface, the inside may still be tender for months.

Is It difficult to sleep with a Daith piercing?

During the healing process, it’s often recommended to sleep on your back to avoid irritation and discomfort. However, if you prefer sleeping on your side, our Ear Piercing Pillow is an excellent solution designed specifically for side-sleepers. It provides the support and cushioning needed to keep your piercing safe and comfortable while you rest.

Can you wear ear buds with a daith?

You can, but it depends on the jewellery style and your comfort. Some pieces may get in the way or cause irritation. We recommend avoiding in-ear headphones during early healing and opting for over-ear alternatives when possible.
