Vertical Helix vs Hidden Helix Piercings

When it comes to body piercings, the helix is one of the most popular choices for those looking to add a unique touch to their style. Among the helix piercings, are two stand outs: the vertical helix and the hidden helix. While both can enhance the ear’s aesthetic style, they differ in placement, technique, and overall look. Let’s dive into the details to help you choose the right look for you!

Vertical Helix Piercing

The Vertical Helix, also known as a Floating Helix, is a bold and modern ear piercing placed vertically along the upper rim of the ear. Unlike a traditional helix, the labret backing is visible at the top, creating a distinctive and eye-catching look.

The vertical helix is pierced using our sterilised catheter needle method and placed vertically through the cartilage; technique is straightforward and conventional.

Anatomy:

Before proceeding, it’s important to assess whether your ear has enough space along the rim to comfortably accommodate the labret backing. Adequate room helps prevent pressure, irritation, and discomfort during healing.

What Jewellery can I use?

One of the standout features of the vertical helix is its versatility. Multiple piercings can be placed along the rim to create a striking “mohawk” effect. This style is easily elevated with gem-set or premium jewellery tops, adding sparkle and personality while maintaining a clean, modern aesthetic.

Hidden Helix Piercing

The Hidden Helix, sometimes referred to as a Floating Helix, is a more subtle and elegant option that blends elements of both a helix and flat piercing. It is positioned beneath the curve of the helix rim, allowing the jewellery to sit discreetly out of direct view.

While Essential Beauty does not formally list the hidden helix as a standard piercing option, it may be possible for clients with suitable anatomy. This can be discussed between the Beauty Therapist and the client during the appointment.

Anatomy:

Placement varies depending on the client’s ear shape and the piercer’s professional assessment. The key requirement is that the cartilage has enough natural curl and hollowness so the piercing entry point remains hidden beneath the helix rim. Proper anatomy ensures both comfort and the desired “hidden” effect.

A hidden helix is pierced using our sterilised catheter needle method, like the vertical helix piercing. However, the placement requires a more careful approach to achieve that floating effect. The piercer will aim for a specific angle so you can’t see where the exit hole is and ensures that the jewellery sits comfortably and appears to float

What Jewellery can I use?

Hidden helix piercings use specially designed jewellery with a curved front that tucks neatly under the helix rim. From there, a delicate chain or dangle drops down, creating the illusion of a floating earring. This style is perfect for clients who want something unique, elegant, and slightly unexpected.

  • It has been 12-24 months since you received your piercing*.
  • There is no more discharge or redness.
  • The piercing is not tender to touch.
  • The jewellery is loose and moves somewhat freely.

*Please note: these times are general, and healing varies for the individual. If you are unsure, visit your Piercing Experts to consult and advise.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Weeks 1-2 clean twice daily with Sterilear Step-1 Piercing Spray.
  • Weeks 3 and onwards Clean twice daily with Sterilear Step-2 Piercing Spray.
  • Avoid sleeping on your piercing.
  • Do not touch, twist, or knock your jewellery.
  • Avoid tight clothing that may rub.

Remember, piercings heal from the outside in. Even if it looks healed on the surface, the inside may still be tender for months.
