Piercing aftercare

Essential Beauty’s two Step Sterilear Piercing Spray system has been designed to aid in healing your new piercing. Our Sterilear aftercare sprays can also be used throughout the healing process to clean and care for your piercings.

Our best piercing aftercare tip… be patient and follow the advice of your piercer! Healing can take anywhere from 1-12 months (or even longer), so stick with your piercing aftercare plan. It also depends on the type of piercing, fleshy areas like the lobes will heal quickly in 1-2 months, but if you’ve had anywhere in your cartilage pierced, like your conch or helix, you can expect it to take a year to heal.

Weeks 1 & 2 after your piercing

Sterilear Step 1: Clean Piercing Spray

  • Made for use in the initial stage of healing.
  • Contains the optimal concentration of salts to promote healing.
  • Sterile solution helps prevent bacteria from forming around the piercing.
  • Helps to safely clean and wash away dried discharge, crust or secretions around the piercing.
  • Non-irritating formula to help calm and heal the skin.
  • Aseptic pump pack keeps the solution sterile.

Directions: Spray front and back twice a day, directly over the piercing and jewellery. Avoid eye contact. Not for oral use. External use only.

Weeks 3 & 4 after your piercing

Sterilear Step 2: Care Piercing Spray

  • Enhanced formula enriched with aloe vera, lavender and vitamin E to soothe the skin and promote healing.
  • Contains peppermint oil to provide anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal properties.
  • Aseptic pump pack keeps the solution sterile.

Directions: Spray front and back twice a day, directly over the piercing and jewellery. Avoid eye contact. Not for oral use. External use only.

When can I change my jewellery after getting pierced?

You can change your jewellery after the recommended initial healing time has passed, and you feel that your piercing has fully healed. If you are unsure, pop into your local Essential Beauty & Piercing salon and chat with one of our staff members.

When you’re ready for a jewellery changeover come and visit us in salon! We have a wide range of custom body jewellery available in a variety of different colours, designs and metals. Changing your own body jewellery can be tricky. If you purchase jewellery in salon or via our online shop, we are happy to change it over for you at no cost!

How many piercings can I get in one session?

It is not uncommon to have multiple piercings performed on the same day. We recommend not getting more than four piercings in one session, especially if you’re getting them on the same ear. Getting multiple piercings can also cause increased swelling during healing and can prolong healing time.

Be mindful of getting cartilage piercings on both ears at the same time, as it can be difficult to sleep. Handy tip: Sleeping on your back is ideal, but you can also use a travel neck pillow so that you can sleep on your side if you’re strictly a side-sleeper! See our TikTok below:

How long will my piercing take to heal?

Healing time is different depending on the part of your body that you get pierced. Areas that are softer, with no cartilage, such as ear lobes, will heal faster than other areas. Healing times can vary from person to person and will also depend on how well you follow our recommended aftercare instructions. Any piercing can take up to a year or even longer to heal. After these recommended time frames, you may be ready to change over your piercing jewellery:

Ear lobes & tongue: 1–2 months
Lip/labret: 6-8 weeks for initial healing
Belly/navel: 6–12 months
Eyebrownose, & dermal: 2–4 months
Septum: 3–4 months
Surface: 3–6 months
Monroe & cheeks: 3–5 months
Nipple & genital: 4–6 months

After the times listed above, you may be able to remove your jewellery for a short time. However, your piercing may begin to shrink. We cannot give you an exact time for how long you can remove your jewellery before it becomes difficult to reinsert. This varies between people. Just remember – never force jewellery into a piercing that has shrunk. If you have any questions, please visit the piercing experts at your local Essential Beauty & Piercing salon.

For more details visit our piercing aftercare page.

Can I get pierced with a ring?

Yes, we can pierce you with a ring in most areas. Labret bars are commonly used for cartilage piercings on the ear, and pigtail studs for the nose. However, it is possible to get pierced with a ring in your cartilage or nose straight away! Other popular areas to have pierced with rings are the nipple, conch, lip, eyebrow and navel/belly.

Getting pierced with a ring is considered a jewellery upgrade, we recommend discussing your options with your Beauty Therapist!
